A simple explanation of the Tifinaghe alphabet, its standardization in Morocco, and the transcription rules adopted by IRCAM, strictly based on Boukris et al. (2008), La nouvelle grammaire de l’amazighe, Chapter I. At the end of this course, you will find 30 exercises with their corrections.
📘 Course: Standardized Tifinaghe in Morocco
🅐 What is Tifinaghe?
Tifinaghe is the alphabet used to write the Amazigh language. It was standardized by IRCAM (Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture in Morocco) based on a phonological approach, meaning it records only the sounds essential to the meaning of the word.
🅑 Characteristics of the IRCAM-Tifinaghe Alphabet
| Type of Phoneme | Number | Examples in Tifinaghe |
|---|---|---|
| Consonants | 27 | ⴱ ⴷ ⴼ ⴳ ⵀ ⵃ ⵄ ⵖ ⵊ ⵍ ⵎ ⵏ ⵇ ⵔ ⵙ ⵚ ⵛ ⵜ ⵟ ⵡ ⵢ ⵣ ⵥ ⴽ ⵅ |
| Semi-consonants | 2 | ⵢ, ⵡ |
| Full vowels | 3 | ⴰ, ⵉ, ⵓ |
| Neutral vowel | 1 | ⴻ (schwa: mute e) |
-
One phoneme = one grapheme
Each meaningful sound is represented by a single character.
Example: ⵛ (for the “ch” sound) instead of "ch" in French. -
Neutralization of regional variants
Rare or region-specific sounds are not retained.
Example: [β] or [dj] are not written; only ⴱ or ⵊ are used. -
Avoid unnecessary sounds in writing
Not included: spirant consonants, affricates, other emphatics. -
Retain sounds shared by all Amazigh variants
The goal is to promote a unified national orthography.
🅓 Use of ⴻ (mute e)
The ⴻ is used in three main cases:
-
To avoid three identical consecutive consonants:
ⵜⵜⵜⵔ → ✅ ⵜⴻⵜⵜⵔ (tettr)
ⵎⵎⵎⵉⵙ → ✅ ⵎⴻⵎⵎⵉⵙ (memmis) -
To clarify prefixes:
ⵜⵜⵓ (accomplished form with pronoun "you") → ⵜⴻⵜⵜⵓ (tettu)
ⵜⵜⴰⵡⵉ (non-accomplished form with "you") → ⵜⴻⵜⵜⴰⵡⵉ (tettawi) -
Roots with geminated consonants and one single:
ⴷⵎⵎⵎ → ✅ ⴷⵎⵎⴻⵎ (dmmem)
🅔 Some Examples
| Amazigh Word (Latin) | Tifinaghe | Translation |
